6-Bromonaphthalene-1,2-dione is a chemical compound that inhibits the replication of influenza A and B viruses. It has been shown to be active against other enveloped viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 1 and vesicular stomatitis virus. 6-Bromonaphthalene-1,2-dione is a white solid that has antiviral activity in tissue culture. This antiviral effect is due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of viral RNA by reacting with the 3' terminal nucleotide of the viral mRNA strand. The reaction mechanism for this inhibition is similar to that of the nucleoside analogues acyclovir and ganciclovir. 6-Bromonaphthalene-1,2-dione also exhibits antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi.
