1,2-Dihydroxy-4-nitrobenzene is a hydroxamic acid that is used as a fungicide. It has been shown to be effective against phytopathogenic fungi including Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, and Phytophthora. 1,2-Dihydroxy-4-nitrobenzene inhibits the growth of these fungi by binding to their cell walls and disrupting their metabolism. This compound also binds to sulphides in rhizoctonia and prevents the oxidation of sulphides to form toxic hydrogen sulphide gas. The compound can be used as an anti-fungal agent in agriculture because it is not toxic to mammals.
