5-Bromo-8-methoxyquinoline is a natural product that has shown anticancer properties. It binds to topoisomerase I and II, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of DNA strands, and inhibits their activity. This binding prevents the enzyme from cutting DNA, leading to cell death. 5-Bromo-8-methoxyquinoline also acts as a ligand for dehydrogenases, which are enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of other molecules. The structure of 5-bromo-8-methoxyquinoline has been determined by X-ray crystallography studies. The compound has been shown to have fluorescence properties in water solutions and optical properties in organic solvents.
