(R)-S-tert-Butyl 2-methylpropane-2-sulfinothioate is a reagent and a ligand, which can be used as a chiral auxiliary in asymmetric synthesis to form the corresponding enantiomers of alcohols. It is prepared from dimethyl sulfoxide and (R)-(+)-2-methylpropane-2-thiol by racemization with ethyl acetate. The product is purified by preparative HPLC using dimethyl sulfoxide as an eluent. This compound has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the preparation of optically active thiols. Recrystallization of the salt from methanol yields white crystals that melt at 145°C.
