1H-Benzo[d]imidazole-4-carbonitrile is a monoacetate analog of imidazole that is used in the treatment of hypertension. It has been shown to act as a central alpha-2 adrenergic agonist and facilitates the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic neurons. It also inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which degrades norepinephrine to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), thereby increasing norepinephrine levels in the synaptic cleft. 1H-Benzo[d]imidazole-4-carbonitrile has been evaluated for use as an antihypertensive drug and appears to be a promising agent for the treatment of hypertension.
