The absorption of energy by this compound causes electrons to be excited from their ground state to an excited state. When these electrons return to their ground state, they release energy in the form of heat or light. This is how 4-bromo-2-hexylthiophene can act as a photoinitiator, causing other molecules to undergo polymerization reactions and hardening plastics.
