Epibatidine is a potent analgesic drug that belongs to the group of epiboxidine derivatives. It is an analogue of the alkaloid atropine and its structure contains two nitrogen atoms in addition to the six carbons. The pharmacological effects are similar to those of atropine, with a potency 10-fold higher than that of morphine. Epibatidine has been shown to have a high affinity for muscarinic receptors and acts as an agonist at these sites. It also binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, but with lower affinity. Epibatidine is structurally related to epiboxidine, which also has analgesic properties and is used clinically as an anti-arrhythmic agent in Russia.
