Bromethalin is a neurotoxin that affects the central nervous system. It is used in veterinary medicine to control rodents, but can also be used to control other pests such as insects and moles. Bromethalin poisoning of humans is rare, but can occur through accidental ingestion or inhalation. Treatment with atropine or pralidoxime may be needed if bromethalin exposure causes respiratory or cardiovascular symptoms. Bromethalin has been shown to cause sublethal effects on animals, including decreased weight and impaired reproduction. This chemical has been shown to have a negative effect on the environment when it is not properly disposed of. It also has an adverse effect on women because it can cross the placenta barrier during pregnancy and cause developmental toxicity in the fetus.
