1-(4-Bromopyridin-2-yl)ethanone is a synthetic compound that is used as an industrial catalyst. It is also found in recycled products, such as polyurethane foam and polystyrene, and in foods and beverages. The chemical can be produced by the cyanation of phenylacetonitrile with ethylthiocarbonyl chloride in the presence of titanium tetrachloride or by the reaction of ethyl acetoacetate with phosphorus pentachloride. 1-(4-Bromopyridin-2-yl)ethanone can be used as a catalyst for the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, including isonicotinamide. The compound has two isomers: 1-(4-bromopyridin-2-yl)ethanone (1) and 1-(4-chloropyridin-2-yl)ethanone (2).
