2-(2-Bromoethoxy)ethanol is a monomer with ophthalmic applications. It is lightfast and has high photostability, and it fulfills the requirements of FDA regulation 21 CFR 1040.10 for class I medical devices. 2-(2-Bromoethoxy)ethanol is fluorescent, positioning, and functionalizable. It can be used as a fluorescence marker in tissues, fulfills the requirements of FDA regulation 21 CFR 1040.10 for class I medical devices, and is cytotoxic to cells at higher concentrations. Ethanolic solutions of this compound are stable at temperatures up to 40°C (104°F), but decompose at temperatures above 100°C (212°F).
