5-Bromo-7-methoxybenzofuran is an analog of the natural product, 7-methoxybenzofuran. It is a palladium catalyst that can be used in biological systems and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. 5-Bromo-7-methoxybenzofuran has been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, respectively. 5-Bromo-7-methoxybenzofuran also inhibits the activity of other inflammatory enzymes that are involved in the inflammatory response such as protein kinase C (PKC) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2). This natural product has also been shown to have activity against cancer cells.
