6-Benzyloxygramine is a thyroxine (T4) metabolite that is formed by the oxidation of 6-hydroxylated T4. It has been shown to inhibit the conversion of T4 to triiodothyronine (T3). This conversion is catalyzed by type I 5'-deiodinase and requires NADPH as cofactor. 6-Benzyloxygramine can also be converted into skatole, which is a foul smelling compound that is excreted in the urine. The biosynthesis of 6-benzyloxygramine occurs in the liver and brain tissues, but it is not known how this compound is generated.
