L-Buthionine sulfoxide (BSO) is an amino acid derivative that can protect neurons from excitotoxicity, a process that occurs when nerve cells are exposed to excessive levels of glutamate. It has been shown to protect cultured brain cells from radiation and protects against the death of neurons caused by ischemia or stroke. BSO also stimulates the production of growth factors, which may contribute to its neuroprotective effects. BSO has also been postulated to act as a metabolic cofactor in energy metabolism and heat shock protein synthesis.
