O-Benzyl-DL-serine is a synthetic growth factor that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It is an o-benzyl ester of L-serine and has been shown to be a macroinitiator for the ring opening polymerization of poly(vinyl chloride). In addition, O-Benzyl-DL-Serine can inhibit the growth of aerobacter aerogenes by competitive inhibition. This compound may also be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease due to its ability to block amide formation.
