5-Bromo-2-iodobenzaldehyde is a synthetic chemical that is used as a chemosensor. It has been shown to be an effective quencher of the fluorescence of aromatic amines, such as quinoline derivatives, in the presence of transition metal ions. 5-Bromo-2-iodobenzaldehyde is also used for the synthesis of a number of other chemical compounds, including pharmaceuticals and dyes. The compound can be converted to 5-bromoindole by elimination with acid or to 5-bromoindigo with base. The compound's chromophore contains electron density on nitrogen atoms, which makes it an acceptor for electrons from metal ions.
