4-Biphenylboronic acid pinacol ester (4BB) is a choline analog that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine in the brain. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to an increase in the concentration of acetylcholine and its metabolites, resulting in increased activity at cholinergic synapses. 4BB has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase with a mechanism of action similar to that of physostigmine and donepezil. 4BB has also been shown to be an effective radiotracer for imaging the central nervous system, as it binds with high affinity to cholinergic neurotransmitter receptors. The reaction can be scaled up for production by using amines as substrates.
