Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a strong organic acid that can be used to activate hydroxyl groups. It is used in the synthesis of a monoclonal antibody, which recognizes and binds to cancer cells. TFA has been shown to inhibit endothelial cell proliferation, thereby preventing the formation of new blood vessels in tumors. This agent also induces apoptosis in cancer cells by cleaving disulfide bonds in proteins and by inhibiting protein synthesis. Trifluoroacetic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of mouse melanoma cells, human breast cancer cells, human prostate cancer cells, and human glioma cells.
