Benzidine-2,2'-disulfonic acid is a monomolecular dichroic molecule that has an absorption band at approximately 370 nm. It absorbs water vapor and chloride ions and can be used as a sulfonation reagent. Benzidine-2,2'-disulfonic acid binds to the chloride ion in aqueous solutions and forms a stable complex. This stable complex is easily separated from other ions by gravimetric analysis. Benzidine-2,2'-disulfonic acid can also be prepared by reacting diphenyl ether with bromine in the presence of light or radiation. The reaction product can then be precipitated from solution by adding organic solvents such as benzene or chloroform. The compound has been found to have magnetic resonance spectroscopy properties that depend on its environment.
