Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium is a hydrogenated organometallic compound that can be activated by heating or photolysis. This chemical is capable of forming hydrogen bonds between the hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atoms on magnesium oxide. The activation energy for this process is about 10-20 kJ/mol, which is relatively low. The optical properties of bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium are dependent on its environment and can change from red to green depending on the presence of other molecules or ions. Researchers are also looking into how these optical properties could be used to study cell growth rates.
