Boc-4-cyano-L-phenylalanine is a prodrug that is converted to phenylacetate, the active form, by esterases in the body. It is used as an anti-tuberculosis drug that enters cells and inhibits protein synthesis. The 4-cyano group on the Boc-4-cyano-L-phenylalanine molecule makes it resistant to modification from reactive oxygen species and prevents it from being metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Boc-4-cyano-L-phenylalanine has been shown to be more potent than other prodrugs for the treatment of tuberculosis because it can inhibit protein synthesis at millimolar concentrations. This agent also has a high uptake into cells and does not require glutathione for activation or inactivation.
