3-Benzyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylthiazolium chloride is an isozyme of carbonic anhydrase, which is a zinc metalloenzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis to convert esters and amides into carboxylic acids and amines, respectively. 3-Benzyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylthiazolium chloride has been shown to be active against zonisamide and pentane, but not insoluble compounds such as acetone or acetonitrile. It also shows no activity against cytochrome c.
