5-Bromo-2-chloro-4-methylpyridine is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ligand that has been shown to be stereoselective. It is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and has been shown to be a competitive antagonist of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. 5-Bromo-2-chloro-4-methylpyridine binds to the receptor with high affinity and specificity, but does not activate it. It also inhibits catalytic activity and attenuates the effects of acetylcholine on the release of catecholamines from sympathetic neurons in vitro. 5-Bromo-2-chloro-4-methylpyridine can also act as a competitive antagonist of tropane alkaloids, such as atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine.
