The (S)-enantiomer of 1-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-2-azetidinemethanol is a chiral, methanol-soluble liquid with a boiling point of 117−119 °C and a melting point of −76.5 °C, which can be obtained as an oil. The (R)-enantiomer is also a chiral, methanol-soluble liquid with a boiling point of 119−121 °C and a melting point of −87.5 °C, which can be obtained as an oil. The two enantiomers are racemic mixtures at the level of their physical properties and have the same chemical properties.
This product is used in organic synthesis to produce chiral products such as 1-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)pyrrolidine or 3-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)piperidine.
