It is used as an industrial chemical for wastewater treatment, as well as for viscosity control in oil production, and as a catalyst for the production of activated fatty acids. 1-Butyl-3-methylpyridinium Bromide has been shown to have acute toxicities in animal studies, which may be due to its ability to bind to fatty acids in the body and inhibit their normal function in the body.
