Benzyl 4-nitrophenyl carbonate is a synthetic intermediate that is used in the synthesis of aziridines. It can be prepared by acetylation of benzaldehyde with nitroethane, followed by removal of the benzoic acid. It can also be generated from divinylbenzene and aziridine. The material has a melting point of about 160°C and solubility in chloroform, methanol, or carbon tetrachloride. Benzyl 4-nitrophenyl carbonate is typically used as an unsolvated starting material for the synthesis of amines and carboxylic acids.
