4-Butylphenol is an aryl halide that has been found to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human colon cancer cells in vitro, and in Caco-2 cells, inhibits water vapor transport but not the transport of other solutes. 4-Butylphenol also inhibits cellular proliferation and induces cell death by inhibiting metabolic activity, including glucose uptake and glycolysis. This compound is metabolized through benzyl groups, which are removed from the molecule after they react with a hydroxyl group on carbon atoms in the unsaturated ketone.
