Benzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxaldehyde is a five-membered heterocyclic compound that has been synthesized and structurally confirmed by X-ray crystallographic data. It was synthesized starting from potassium dichromate and amines. The compound undergoes cyclodehydration to form an imine, which then reacts with the metal ion to form an intermediate that undergoes debromination to form the final product. The reaction mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group followed by a nucleophilic attack on the amide group, leading to formation of an amide bond. Benzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxaldehyde has also been shown to metabolise into chalcones, primary amines, and other products through debromination.
