7-Bromobenz[a]anthracene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a hydroxyl group on the 7th carbon. It has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats and mice, and can cause cancer in humans. 7-Bromobenz[a]anthracene is absorbed by inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. This compound has been shown to bind to DNA and inhibit the activity of enzymes that are important for normal cell growth and replication. Target tissues include the liver, kidney, lung, breast, ovary, prostate gland, and stomach. The carcinogenic potential of this compound is due to its ability to bind covalently with DNA and form adducts with guanine residues.
