5-Bromo-2-iodo-m-xylene is a chemical compound that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus subtilis. It is also capable of inhibiting the growth of Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antimicrobial activity of this compound is due to its ability to cause bacterial cell death by damaging the bacterial cell wall, disrupting the bacterial membrane and DNA. 5-Bromo-2-iodo-m-xylene is activated by heat and light, and can be used thermally or photochemically for disinfection purposes. This compound has been shown to have a dihedral angle of about 100°, which is sufficient for favourable interactions with the target site on bacterial membranes.
