2-Bromooctane is a solvent that is miscible with water, ethanol, and acetone. It has a boiling point of around 104 °C and a molecular weight of 188.2g/mol. 2-Bromooctane has been used as a transport medium for the synthesis of polyethylene glycols. 2-Bromooctane is also an organic solvent that can be used in reactions involving nucleophilic substitutions with halides, hydroxide solution, or polyethylene glycols. The rate of reaction increases with the addition of chloride ions to the reaction mixture. The nucleophilic substitution reaction rate can be measured by electrochemical data such as current and voltage measurements and by kinetic studies such as constant and differential rate tests.
