Descrizione

Bis(fluoroethyl)nitrosourea (BFENU) is a compound that can be used as a diagnostic or therapeutic agent. It is a modification of fluorodeoxyuridine, which is an anticancer drug. BFENU inhibits the production of messenger RNA and DNA in cancer cells. BFENU binds to the guanine base in DNA, which prevents formation of purines and pyrimidines, leading to cell death by lack of nucleic acid precursors for replication. BFENU also has antitumor activity against leukemia cells in vivo. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood but may involve base formation with cellular components such as proteins and nucleic acids.
