Bis(pentafluorobenzyl)disulfide is a reactive alkylating agent used as a chemical stabilizer in the manufacture of plastics and synthetic fibers. It reacts with sulfhydryl groups on cysteine residues to form disulfide bonds, which stabilize the protein against denaturation and proteolysis. Bis(pentafluorobenzyl)disulfide has also been shown to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, including Clostridium spiroforme and Clostridium perfringens. This agent is metabolized by the body through hydrolysis, chloride conjugation, or sulfhydryl oxidation to form bis(2-methylpropyl)sulfide. The metabolites are excreted by the kidney in urine. Bis(pentafluorobenzyl)disulfide is not known to cause death when inhaled at concentrations less than 10 ppm for up to 6 hours per day for up to 5
