3-Bromo-1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-Propanol is an epoxide that can be used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It has been shown to function as a reaction medium for the formation of quaternary ammonium salts and fluorescence. 3-Bromo-1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-Propanol also reacts with activated methylene compounds to form an epoxide. The rate of this reaction is determined by the concentration of reactants and solvent and the time allowed for the reaction to occur. The mechanism of this reaction is not fully understood but it is thought that it proceeds through a concerted process. 3-Bromo-1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-Propanol can also be used to measure profiles or spontaneous reactions in translated spectra and convolution techniques. This chemical has been shown to interact with DNA in cells.
