Di-tert-butylsilane is a synthetic organosilicon compound. It has been used as a reagent to convert ketones and aldehydes into alcohols, and to prepare Grignard reagents. Di-tert-butylsilane is also used in cationic polymerization, which involves the reaction of an organic monomer with a reactive silicon compound and a metal salt catalyst. This process produces polymers with silicon side chains. Di-tert-butylsilane has also been used in epitaxy, or the process of growing crystals on substrates, to grow silicon nanowires. The vapor pressure of di-tert-butylsilane is low, which allows it to be introduced into solvents without causing excessive boiling or condensation. Functional groups on di-tert-butylsilane allow it to react with other molecules that contain these same functional groups. Thermally, di-tert-
