Methyl Dihydroabietate is a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor that can be used for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It inhibits the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and, therefore, prevents the degradation of cartilage. Methyl Dihydroabietate has synergistic effects with levopimaric acid, a divalent hydrocarbon that inhibits the production of prostaglandins. This combination leads to increased viscosity and inhibition of cartilage degradation. Methyl Dihydroabietate also inhibits fatty acid oxidation products such as hydrogenated and nonpolar solvent compounds. These inhibitory effects on lipid oxidation may reduce inflammation in joints by decreasing free radicals and reactive oxygen species.
