4-Chloromethyl benzaldehyde is an organic compound with a chemical structure that can be classified as a furanic. It has been shown to exhibit antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus and other bacteria. The growth curves of these bacteria were inhibited by the addition of 4-chloromethyl benzaldehyde, and the growth rate was found to be reduced. 4-Chloromethyl benzaldehyde exhibits cytotoxicity in human serum, which may be attributed to its significant cytotoxicity. This chemical also reacts with glutamic acid at the C4 position and forms a Schiff base, thus inhibiting bacterial growth. The reaction mechanism of 4-chloromethyl benzaldehyde is efficient, as it can be used as a diagnostic tool for cancerous cells and minimal inhibitory concentrations have been shown in the range of 0.01 to 1 μM.
