2-Chloro-N-(2-chloro-4-methyl-3-pyridinyl)-3-pyridinecarboxamide is a prodrug that is metabolized to nevirapine, its active form. It is an inorganic base and an aromatic hydrocarbon. The optimal reaction temperature for this compound is around 20°C. 2-Chloro-N-(2-chloro-4-methyl-3-pyridinyl)-3-pyridinecarboxamide has been shown to be catalytic in the presence of acids or bases and can be used as a prodrug to produce nevirapine. This prodrug has been shown to have antiretroviral activity against HIV strains that are resistant to other drugs.
