2-Cyano-N-cyclohexylacetamide is a pyrazole derivative that has been prepared by irradiation of the precursor 2-chloro-N-cyclohexylacetamide. The compound has shown to be an efficient photocatalyst for the oxidation of chloride to produce hydrogen chloride in water. This reaction is catalysed by light and it can be done without any external energy input. The method was developed using techniques from both organic chemistry and physics, as well as a functional theoretical approach. The technique can be applied in many other reactions, such as oxidation of alcohols to ketones, which may lead to new methods for generating fuel or chemicals.
