2-(Chloromethyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine is an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis. It binds to the bacterial ribosome and blocks a step in protein synthesis, preventing cell division. The bactericidal activity of 2-(chloromethyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine was found to be strain-dependent and to vary with parameter values (e.g., pH). Significant cytotoxicity was observed in human cells. The drug has been shown to have synergistic effects with other antibiotics such as chloramphenicol, erythromycin, and sulfonamides. Structural analysis revealed that 2-(chloromethyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine has a similar chemical structure as fluoroquinolones and antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B.
