1-(2-Chlorophenyl)ethylamine is a monosubstituted amine with optical activity that can be prepared by the hydrogenation of 1-phenylethylamine. The enantioselective hydrogenation of this compound was achieved in high yields when using a chiral ligand and phosphonate esters as catalysts. The enantioselective hydrogenations were carried out by stirring in a sealed tube at room temperature. This method was also used to prepare other related compounds, such as (1-chloroethyl)methylamine and (2-chloroethyl)methylamine.
