Econazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that belongs to the azole class of drugs. It is used to treat skin and nail infections caused by fungi, such as ringworm (tinea). Econazole inhibits the growth of fungi by interfering with their ability to form the cell membrane. It binds to ergosterol, a component of fungal cell membranes, and prevents it from being converted into cholesterol. This results in cell death and inhibition of fungal growth. Econazole also has antimicrobial activity against bacteria. Analogues have been developed that have high levels of antimicrobial activity against bacteria, but are less toxic than econazole.
