5-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-furoic acid (5-CPFA) is a modified furoic acid that has been shown to have antinociceptive effects in animal models of inflammatory pain. It alleviates the pain by blocking sodium channels and inhibiting the release of prostaglandin E2. 5-CPFA also has the ability to inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis, which may be due to its ability to deplete intracellular zinc levels and enhance zinc bioavailability. 5-CPFA can attenuate chronic pain, but it is not yet clear whether this effect is specific for inflammatory pain or non-specific.
