2-Chloro-3-hydroxybenzoic acid is a reactive compound that can be found in the environment. It is used as an antioxidant and has been shown to have a protective effect on blood glucose levels. 2-Chloro-3-hydroxybenzoic acid is also a strong oxidant, but it can be detoxified by reacting with hydrogen peroxide. 2-Chloro-3-hydroxybenzoic acid can also react with 4-chlorophenol to form an adduct that is more hydrophobic than the original compound and thus more likely to adsorb to soil particles. The presence of 2-chloro-3 hydroxybenzoic acid in the environment may be due to its production from solar radiation or from the degradation of carboxylic acids, such as acetic acid or oxalic acid.
