Cefprozil is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity, which may be due to its ability to bind to the IL-2 receptor and inhibit the production of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-2. Cefprozil also binds penicillin-binding protein (PBP) in bacteria, which prevents it from binding with β-lactamase and allows it to remain active in an acidic environment. This drug is effective against gram-positive species such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus viridans group, and Enterococcus faecalis. It is not active against gram negative species such as Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae.
