2-Chloro-1-methyl-(4-methylsulfonyl)benzene is an industrial chemical that is used as a solvent in the production of benzoic acid. It can also be used to recycle toluene. When 2-chloro-1-methyl-(4-methylsulfonyl)benzene reacts with sodium and water, it produces benzoic acid and hydrogen chloride gas. This chemical is highly efficient and has been optimized for synthesis. The reaction can be catalyzed by aluminum or nickel, which are inexpensive and nontoxic.
