4-Carboxy-3-chlorophenylboronic acid is a pharmacological agent that has antiviral properties. It is a singlet oxygen emitting compound and can be used in the development of new strategies for antiviral therapy. 4-Carboxy-3-chlorophenylboronic acid has been shown to inhibit virus growth by blocking viral replication and inhibiting the release of single strand RNA from cells infected with influenza A virus. This compound also inhibits the activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase, which plays an important role in HIV infection. The emission spectrum of this compound was analysed using nanometric techniques and it has been shown to emit singlet oxygen under UV irradiation.
