2-Chloro-3-methylbenzonitrile is a metabolite of naphthalene, a chemical substance that can be found in cigarette smoke and vehicle exhaust. This product is used to detect the presence of naphthalene in urine samples. 2-Chloro-3-methylbenzonitrile has been detected in the urine of smokers with an average detection time of 6 hours. The compound undergoes biotransformation before excretion and can be converted into dihydroxylated metabolites. It also undergoes pharmacokinetic optimization through modifications by β-glucuronidase and monohydroxylation by glucuronyl transferases. A study conducted on rats concluded that 2-chloro-3-methylbenzonitrile has no carcinogenic effects.
