3-Cyano-4-piperidone is an antibacterial agent that is used to treat staphylococcus infections. This drug is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and has been shown to have no detectable levels in the blood or urine. 3-Cyano-4-piperidone inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with protein synthesis, specifically targeting ribosomes. It binds to bacterial ribosomes and prevents proteins from being translated into functional proteins. 3-Cyano-4-piperidone also has been shown to increase bone mass in a mouse model of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The drug may be more effective in treating some infectious diseases than others because it affects translation rather than transcription and replication, which are necessary for the production of many types of bacteria.3
