5-Chloro-7-azaindole is a synthetic compound that is used as a precursor in the manufacture of certain pharmaceuticals. It is made by reacting aniline with chlorosulfonic acid followed by reaction with sodium carbonate to give the corresponding chloroacetaldehyde. The dehydrogenation of this intermediate gives 5-chloro-7-azaindole. 5-Chloro-7-azaindole can be used to produce antiviral drugs and chemotherapy agents, such as acyclovir and methotrexate, respectively. It also has uses in the production of other compounds, such as dyes, plastics, and pesticides.
