Chromium octoate is a polybasic metal salt with a reactive hydroxy group. It is used as a food hydrocolloid and in the production of polymers that are used to coat paper and textiles for protection against moisture. Chromium octoate has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols and ethers. The compound is also used as a radiation stabilizer in polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene.
The name octoate comes from the Latin word octa meaning eight, which refers to the number of carboxylic acid groups on this molecule. Chromium octoate can be produced by reacting chromium(III) oxide with 2-ethylhexanoic acid in the presence of a base or by reacting chromium(III) chloride with 2-ethylhexanoic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst.
